Conductor
and duties
The passenger conductor must ensure that the train is operating
properly and keep an eye out for any problems that could prevent a safe and
successful trip. This might include mechanical problems; concerns about automated systems; and more.
The conductor also must check with the dispatcher
before the train leaves the station to ensure that the departure will be on schedule. Knowing the exact time of departure will allow the
conductor to notify passengers not yet on board that the train is about to
leave. This is done by using the call "all aboard" a short time
before the train leaves the station.
If passengers have questions or problems, it is the
conductor's responsibility to address
them. Conductors are prepared with information about arrival times, numbers
of stops and fares.
The conductor is responsible for collecting passenger tickets or selling the tickets on board.
The conductor spends much of his time walking the
train from end to end. If any mechanism is not functioning properly, the
conductor will assess the situation
and attempt a repair during the run
if possible. If a mechanical problem is beyond the capability of the conductor,
he will work with on-board engineers. |
